Eugène Atget (February 12, 1857 – August 4, 1927) was a French photographer noted for his photographs documenting the architecture and street scenes of Paris.

Completely self-taught, Atget began his career by selling his photographs of the streets of Paris to artists, to be used as models for their paintings. The photographer’s interest in the streets of Paris caught the attention of the Carnavelet Museum and the national library which became his main clients until his death in 1927.An inspiration for the surrealistsand other artists, his work only gained wide attention after his death.
